I Am a Friend of Dominica

----Address on the Farewell Reception Held by 

the Dominican Government

H.E. Charles Savarin, President of the Commonwealth of Dominica,

Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister,

Hon. Alix Boyd-Knights, the Speaker of the House of Assembly,

Hon. Ministers of the Cabinet,

Members of the diplomatic and consular corps,

Friends from the Dominican Government,

My colleagues from the Chinese Embassy,

Members of the media,

Ladies and gentlemen,

First, I would like to express my appreciation to the friendly affection in Hon. Prime Minister's address towards the Chinese Government and people as well as myself, my appreciation to Hon. Prime Minister and the Dominican Government for holding this farewell reception, and my appreciation to every distinguished guest for coming this evening to say goodbye.

We have spent almost 3 years together. At this moment to say goodbye, I have many feelings.

The first one is that I love the Nature Island.

The Nature Island is such a charming place that I fell in love with it when I set foot on it for the first time. I love the mountains and rivers, I love the meadows and woods, and I love the sky and the clouds. Let me tell you a little secret. When I sorted out the files in my computer, I found out that I had already saved dozens of gigabytes of pictures of scenery and people here. To me, they are not just normal pictures, but my wealth worth of treasuring my whole life.

In the past three years, I was not only a resident on the island, but an advertiser or a salesman of it. I introduced the beautiful scenery, essential oil, hand-made soap, sulfur cream, and crafts to my friends in China. I knew that the Nature Island always welcomes tourists, so I persuaded some of my fiends from China, United States and Canada to visit here. In March this year, a young couple visited here to spend their honeymoon. They rented a car and drove all over the island. They said that the over ten days they spent on the island would be the best memory in the whole life.

The second feeling is that I feel grateful to the Nature Island.

I would like to mention particularly that the Dominican people have been very friendly to me. In the past 3 years, besides friends from the political circle including the President, the Prime Minister, Madame Speaker of the House of Assembly and officials of every levels, I made a lot of friends from different circles and places.

I will not forget anthropologist and historian Dr. Lennox Honychurch, who not only offered me his books, but also held meaningful talks with me in many occasions, telling Dominican stories.

I will not forget Benjamin, who worked with a Chinese company in the construction of the highway and the bridge. Every time we met, he hugged me for a long time with a wide smile as a brother.

I will not forget Anika Brown, who studied in China and now working for Dominica Brewery and Beverages. She told me that Kubuli beer is the national pride of Dominica.

I will not forget Mr. Ronald Green, a social activist and an excellent football manager, who talked with me about experiences of playing football and about the training of young football players.

I will not forget Mrs. Jenefer Georges, who lives close to the Pagua River. She planted many vegetables and fruit trees, and when I visited her she ran back and forth between her house and the farm and picked some fresh flowers to make a beautiful bouquet for me.

I will not forget police officer Mr. Darroux and other brothers from the SSU. They guard the Embassy 24-7 so that my colleagues and I can work smoothly and sleep well.

I will not forget the visit to Orion Academy last week. When I took some Chinese textbooks to their principal Ms. Queen Thomas, the lovely kids said in Chinese to me "nice to meet you".

At last I must mention my driver Marc. He drives for me in all these days and nights for 3 years. Without his considerate and careful service, I can not imagine how I could have completed my duty here.

All for each, each for all. My respected Dominican friends, thank you! I will never forget your caring for me and true friendship.

The third feeling is that I wish the Nature Island a bright future.

In the three years, we made friends, and worked together for the future. During my busy work and tours all over the island, I kept thinking about what the future of Dominica would be like.

This May, on the handover ceremony of sewing machines to communities in rural areas, I told the story of my mother teaching me how to use a sewing machine. I told my friends that the little sewing machines helped many normal Chinese families realize their dreams. It was hard work that made China what it is today. I believe Dominican people must be able to realize your dreams with hard work too.

If there is a dream, there is a direction; if there is an effort made, there will be an achievement; if there is cooperation, there is mutual benefit. If we make the cake bigger, everyone can get a bigger share of it. Next year, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations. Both of our two governments are planning what to do in next year and the next 10 years, following the instructions of the leaders of our two countries. I believe that people of our two countries must be able to unfold the wings of imagination and realize more common dreams through joint and consistent efforts. 

Together, let us make the cake of cooperation bigger and bigger.

I believe that Dominica will have a bright future.

I hope one day when I come back, a developing Dominica will embrace me even more warmly.
